Northland Health Services

Northland’s Health Center provides medical services to the students on campus. This facility furnishes nonprescription medicine and first-aid supplies to treat minor illnesses or injuries. The Health Center is available to all students from 8:00 A.M. to5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, where registered nurses provide daily care for illness or injury, as well as preventive health care. After office hours, an on-call nurse is available for phone consultation. Doctor’s appointments, the financial responsibility of each student, can be arranged through the college nursing staff. For serious illness or injury, the Health Center nurse will make arrangements for further treatment at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The Health Center staff consists of two full-time, registered nurses, Mrs. Sandy Seely and Miss Jill Johnson, as well as two work study receptionists who help with scheduling appointments and receiving calls. Mrs. Seely, the director of the Health Center, is also a licensed EMT which is an added benefit to the Health Center due to the rural location of the school. Mrs. Seely and Miss Johnson enjoy attending health education classes and refresher courses to further their medical training.

Not only does the staff of the Health Center desire to meet the physical needs of the students, but they desire to meet the spiritual needs as well. Often, physical symptoms result from various responses to life problems. When a student arrives at the Health Center with issues such as this, a door of opportunity is there for the nursing staff to assess each situation, to give advice, and to also encourage the students in their personal walk with Christ. At times the Lord allows serious physical trials or tragedies to occur in the lives of the students. These difficult times are an avenue through which the Lord allows the Health Center staff to develop friendships with the students as they offer comfort and counsel. Students are often referred to the Student Life Office for further counseling in an effort to help meet their specific individual spiritual needs.

In an effort to develop greater health awareness among the faculty and staff, the Health Center, in conjunction with the Health and Wellness Committee, recently launched a health and wellness program on February 1, 2008. The “Fit for Service” program was developed to encourage the faculty and staff to make wise lifetime decisions in seeking to glorify God with their bodies. The faculty and staff have taken on this challenge and can be seen tracking their steps with pedometers all around campus. In the future, the Health Center would like to extend this challenge to the student body to promote greater awareness of current health issues.

The Health Center’s mission statement is to assist the faculty, staff, students, and visitors with health promotion, disease prevention, and health protection through assessment, education, communication, and discipleship opportunities. Mrs. Seely’s one on one interaction with her Emergency Response students reflects this statement as she trains these students to identify and care for the physical needs of others. The Health Center staff looks forward to each opportunity they have to help the students take care of their bodies for the glory of God.
