Hi prospective student,

I have the opportunity each summer to work at our Camp here at Northland. It’s an incredible time of spiritual growth for me, and it’s also a lot of fun. This past summer one of my favorite activities that I was able to participate in was our night-time zip line for the adult sponsors. Each Tuesday night during Teen Camp, we

would open up both of our zip lines for an exciting and thrilling night time plunge into the darkness!

Each week there would be dozens of sponsors that would climb the steps, get harnessed, hook onto the cable, and sit and ponder for a while what was about to happen. The interesting thing is that this zip line that caused them such great anxiety was the exact same zip line they had ridden without hesitation in the daylight!

It reminded me of how many times that God has clearly given me direction and burden while I sat at His feet in the “daylight”, and then found myself in the darkness questioning what He had shown me! Hebrews 11:1 says “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” You see, my faith doesn’t become “faith” until it’s tested. Faith isn’t built on massive amounts of evidence but on trusting in the situations that make no earthly sense! Maybe you made a commitment to God this summer about your future, maybe your vocation, or even about attending a Christian college; but now that you’re back into the daily routine, you’re finding it difficult to continue to pursue those things because of a lack of encouragement and support. Remember, what God shows you in the light will also be true in the dark, and it will be the true test of your faith.

After our night time zip line adventures, some of those same sponsors would come visit the event the next day. Many times they would look up at the tower and say something like “I don’t know why it was so much scarier in the dark. It’s really the same ride at night as it is in the day.” So true. Our steps of faith and trust in reality are the same in the dark times as they are in the light! Walk…or jump…by faith!

I would love to hear from you. If you want to reply, I will answer you personally.

Talk to you soon,
